Ok, the Adult Beginner just had a major revelation.
Ready for this Giant Realization Bomb?
Ok, here it is:
It just came to me why every ballet class always always forever starts with plié.
It’s not just tradition,
It’s not just meant to torture those of us who don’t warm up properly before class,
Nay, Gentle Reader, we plié first and always because:
Plié is the most important.
Plié blows it’s piercing silver whistle in our faces and says, “Atteeeeeeeention! Time to turn-out and bend deep! Yes I’m talking to you, ya Big Lump! And keep those little toes down!”
Don’t bend deep? Jumps become shallow, noisy, potentially knee-jarring pain-fests.
Don’t turn-out? Ankles put out the welcome mat for sprain and other unsavory visitors.
Plié comes first because it’s gotta be your first instinct.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go pat myself on the back for being such a clever girl.
