Six Degrees of Who?!

We’ve been working on something at the barre that is meant to help develop an arc-ing quality to our grande jetés in the center. Smirnoff doesn’t want to see any flat grande jeté like all the young kids are doing these days.
No ma’am.
He wants a jeté that floats up and back down on a curve. This is more graceful, light, airy. This is what Fokine taught Smirnoff’s father.
Um, I’m sorry, what? Fokine taught your dad?!?!?!
Mikhail Fokine?! Choreographer for the Maryinsky Theater and Diaghlev’s Ballet Russe?!
Holy whuuuuuuut!!!!!
Forget Kevin Bacon, you’re telling me that I’m three freakin degrees of separation from Mikhail Fokine???
Better not think about this too much.
Head might explode.

Welcome to the dance world! It’s a small one after all. :) Seriously though, really stinkin’ cool!

I had a teacher in college who took class at Martha Graham’s (iirc) with Madonna. I bet most people who took at high-end places while she was a dance major could get pretty close to that, though.

  4. I love how much you know about ballet history! So interesting to read. I need to get myself some books!
